## Before you start
- Any plan. Connecting a domain you own is free on Free, Launch and Grow.
- A GoDaddy login and a published yaya site.
- The **DNS steps** from yaya. Open **Website** > **Domain**, type the name in **Hostname** and click **Connect domain**.

GoDaddy lets you edit records only when the domain uses GoDaddy nameservers. If it does not, edit the records at the company that runs the DNS.

## Sign in and find the DNS page
1. Sign in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio.
2. Click the domain to open its Domain Settings page.
3. Open the **DNS** section. It lists every record.

## What the screen calls the fields
- **Type**: CNAME or TXT.
- **Name**: the prefix only, like `www` or `shop`. Do not type your domain name. `@` means the bare domain.
- **Value**: where the record points. For a CNAME, paste the target from yaya.
- **TTL**: leave the value GoDaddy fills in.

## Add the CNAME record for a subdomain or www
1. Click **Add New Record**.
2. Choose **CNAME** from the **Type** menu.
3. Type `www` in **Name**.
4. Paste the target from yaya in **Value**.
5. Click **Save**.

If Domain Protection is on, GoDaddy asks you to verify your identity before it saves.

## Connect the bare domain
GoDaddy documents no ALIAS option for this. Use www and forwarding instead. Forwarding sends visitors from the bare name to the www name.

1. Connect `www.example.com` in yaya and add its CNAME as above.
2. Open **DNS** in GoDaddy, then **Forwarding**.
3. Click **Add Forwarding** and choose **Domain**.
4. Enter `www.example.com` as the destination. GoDaddy applies HTTPS to forwarding on its own.
5. Choose **Permanent (301)** and click **Save**.

Forwarding updates and locks the `@` A record. To change it later, delete the forwarding first.

## Add the TXT ownership record
yaya shows a name that starts with `_cf-custom-hostname`. Type only the part before your domain name.

1. Click **Add New Record** and choose **TXT**.
2. Type `_cf-custom-hostname.www` in **Name** for `www.example.com`. For the bare domain, type `_cf-custom-hostname`.
3. Paste the value from yaya in **Value**.
4. Click **Save**.

## Replace a conflicting record
A CNAME cannot share a name with another record. Delete the old record for the same host before you add the CNAME.

A new GoDaddy domain often has a parking record on `@` and a `www` CNAME that points to `@`. Edit or delete the `www` record. Leave MX and mail TXT records as they are. See [Keep your email working](/support/articles/migrate/keep-your-email-working).

## Check the result in yaya
1. Open **Website** > **Domain**.
2. Click **Check again**.

GoDaddy says most changes apply within an hour, and worldwide updates can take up to 48 hours. yaya sets up HTTPS on its own. There is no deploy step.

## Fix common problems
**GoDaddy rejects the Name.** Type only the prefix, and read the message GoDaddy shows.

**The card stays on "Waiting on DNS".** See [Fix a domain that won't verify](/support/articles/domains/fix-a-domain-that-wont-verify).

**I need the difference between the record types.** See [DNS records explained](/support/articles/domains/dns-records-explained).
