## Before you start
- Any plan. Connecting a domain you own is free on every plan.
- A STRATO login and a published yaya site.

In yaya, open **Website** > **Domain**, type the name in **Hostname**, and click **Connect domain**. Keep the **DNS steps** open.

## Sign in and find the DNS page
1. Sign in at the STRATO **Kunden-Login**.
2. Open **Domains** > **Domainverwaltung**.
3. Click the gear icon (**Zahnrad**) next to your domain.
4. Open the **DNS** tab.

The STRATO pages are in German. The names in this article are the ones on the screen.

## What the screen calls the fields
- **Präfix** is the host. STRATO adds the domain name for you. Type only the front part.
- **Wert** is the value of a TXT record.
- For a CNAME, STRATO asks for one field. It is the target address.

## Add the CNAME record for a subdomain or www
STRATO sets a CNAME on a subdomain only. Create the subdomain first if `www` is not in the list.
1. Open **Domainverwaltung**. Click **Subdomains anzeigen** and open the list.
2. Click the subdomain, for example `www`.
3. Open **DNS-Verwaltung**.
4. Click **verwalten** next to **CNAME-Record**.
5. Type the yaya target in the target field.
6. Tick the box next to the notice text.
7. Click **Einstellungen übernehmen**.

A CNAME turns off every other DNS setting on that subdomain. They come back only after you remove the CNAME.

STRATO does not say whether the CNAME target needs a final dot. Type the target as yaya shows it.

## Use the bare domain
STRATO says a CNAME works for subdomains only. The bare domain keeps its own NS records. No ALIAS option is documented. Use the www plus redirect route.

Use the www fallback.
1. Connect `www.example.com` in yaya and add the CNAME above.
2. Open **Domainverwaltung**. Click the gear icon next to the bare domain.
3. Click **Umleitung einrichten**.
4. Choose **extern** and type `www.example.com` as the target.

STRATO lists a 301 redirect.

Test `https://example.com` after the change. The STRATO pages do not say that the redirect covers HTTPS. See [Use a subdomain or www](/support/articles/domains/use-a-subdomain-or-www).

## Add the TXT ownership record
yaya shows a name that starts with `_cf-custom-hostname.`.
1. Open the **DNS** tab of the domain.
2. Click **TXT- und CNAME-Records verwalten**.
3. Click **Weiteren Record erstellen**.
4. Type `_cf-custom-hostname.www` in **Präfix**.
5. Paste the yaya value in **Wert**.
6. Click **Einstellung übernehmen**.

For the bare domain, type `_cf-custom-hostname`.

Do not change the STRATO SPF rule. It belongs to your mail.

## Delete or replace a conflicting record
A name is either an alias or has other records. Remove the old record on the subdomain before you set the CNAME.

## Check the result in yaya
1. Open **Website** > **Domain**.
2. Click **Check again**.

STRATO says changes can take up to 24 hours. yaya sets up HTTPS on its own. There is no deploy step. Leave your MX records as they are.

## Fix common problems
**There is no CNAME option.** You are on the bare domain. Select the subdomain first.

**The subdomain lost its other settings.** This is normal after you set a CNAME.

**Still waiting.** See [Fix a domain that won't verify](/support/articles/domains/fix-a-domain-that-wont-verify).
