# Create and manage a mailbox

Create a mailbox from the Inbox, the name rules, plan limits and how to delete one.

## Before you start
- You are the workspace owner. Editors and viewers cannot create mailboxes.
- Your plan includes a mailbox: Launch has 1, Grow has 5, Free has 0. See [Plans and billing](/support/articles/billing/plans-and-billing).

## Create a mailbox
About 1 minute.

1. Click **Inbox** in the left rail.
2. Select **Mail settings** (the gear next to search) to open **Mail setup**.
3. Click **Create mailbox**.
4. Type a name in **Mailbox name**, for example `hello` or `bookings`.
5. Check the address shown under the field.
6. Click **Create**.

The address is `name.your-handle@yayasite.com`. It appears under **Mail setup** with its **Receiving** and **Sending** status. If the empty inbox shows **Create a mailbox**, that button opens the same panel.

> Note: **Create mailbox** is hidden when your plan has no mailboxes or you already use all of them.

## Name rules
- Use lowercase letters, numbers, dots, hyphens and low lines (_).
- Start and end with a letter or number.
- Keep it under 64 characters, with no two dots in a row.
- Skip reserved names: abuse, hostmaster, mailer-daemon, postmaster, root, security, webmaster.

## Fix common problems
**There is no Create mailbox button.** You are not the owner, your plan is Free, or you have reached your limit. Editors see "Ask the owner to create a mailbox."

**"Mailboxes come with the Launch and Grow plans."** Your workspace is on the Free plan. Click **Upgrade** in the message, then try again.

**"That mailbox already exists."** Pick a different name.

**"That name is reserved for the mail system."** Pick a name that is not on the reserved list.

## Delete a mailbox
There is no delete button in the workspace yet. An owner deletes a mailbox through the API with a `DELETE` request to `/api/tenants/<tenantId>/mailboxes/<mailboxId>`.

This deletes its messages, attachments and forward address, and it cannot be undone. For API basics, read [Use the REST API](/support/articles/developers/use-the-rest-api).
