# Forward mailbox mail to another address

Send a copy of a mailbox's incoming mail to an outside address, and read its status in Mail setup.

## Before you start
- You are the workspace owner.
- You have a mailbox. See [Create and manage a mailbox](/support/articles/mailboxes/create-a-mailbox).
- You can open the inbox of the address you forward to.

## Turn on forwarding
There is no forwarding form in the workspace yet. An owner sets it up through the API, and the result shows in **Mail setup**.

1. Send a `POST` request to `/api/tenants/<tenantId>/mailboxes/<mailboxId>/forward` with a body like `{"address": "you@example.com"}`.
2. Open the confirmation email sent to that address. The subject is "Confirm yaya mail forwarding".
3. Click the link in the email.
4. Click **Start forwarding to this address**.
5. Open **Inbox**, select **Mail settings**, and find the **Forwarding** line under the mailbox in **Mail setup**.

Forwarding stays off until you confirm. The link expires after 24 hours. Each mailbox has one forward address.

## Read the Forwarding line
- **Pending confirmation**: the email was sent and the link was not used yet.
- **On**: new mail is forwarded.
- **Last forward failed**: the reason follows. Later mail is still tried.

## What gets forwarded
yaya forwards the plain text of each new message and keeps a copy in your inbox. The forwarded message comes from the mailbox address, and **Reply-To** is the original sender. Attachments are not forwarded.

Automatic mail, such as bulk mail, mailing lists and auto-replies, is not forwarded. A suspended mailbox does not forward.

## Change or stop forwarding
- To change the address, send the `POST` request again. It goes back to **Pending confirmation**.
- To stop, send a `DELETE` request to the same path. Forwarding stops at once.

## Fix common problems
**No confirmation email arrived.** Check spam. If you re-add the address within 10 minutes of the last email, yaya says to wait a few minutes.

**"Add a real email address to forward to."** The address is not valid.

**Last forward failed: destination_is_yaya_mailbox.** The address is one of your yaya mailboxes. Forward to an outside address.
