# Switch DNS with no downtime

Add the record yaya shows, wait for the check, and keep the old site up until the new one answers.

## Before you start
- The new site is published and you have checked it on your yayasite.com address.
- You have connected the domain under **Website** > **Domain** and can see the **DNS steps**.
- Access to the DNS settings at your registrar or DNS host. About 10 minutes to change, then a wait.

## Make the change
1. Open the DNS settings for your domain.
2. Lower the TTL on the record you will change to 300 seconds if your provider lets you. Do this a day ahead.
3. Find the existing record for the hostname. It points at your old site.
4. Replace it with the record yaya shows. For a subdomain like www, that is a CNAME to the **CNAME target** on the screen.
5. Add an ALIAS or ANAME record to the same target if the hostname is a bare domain like yourshop.com.
6. Add the second record if the **DNS steps** list one. It carries the verification type, name and value.
7. Save, then return to yaya and click **Check again**.
8. Wait for the domain to show active. HTTPS can take a few minutes after that.

Only touch the web record. Leave MX and TXT records alone. They carry your mail. See [Keep your email working](/support/articles/migrate/keep-your-email-working).

> Warning: Do not change your nameservers. Connecting a site needs one record, and mail records stop working if they are not copied to a new DNS host.

## Fix common problems
**My provider has no ALIAS record.** Connect www.yourdomain.com instead, and set your registrar to forward the bare domain to it.

**The old site still shows.** Your device cached the old answer. See [Old site still showing](/support/articles/troubleshooting/old-site-still-showing).

**The check does not pass.** See [Fix a domain that won't verify](/support/articles/domains/fix-a-domain-that-wont-verify).
