How to write a page title that ranks and gets clicks
The page title is the blue link in a search result. It is also the text in a browser tab. It is one of the strongest signals about what your page covers.
Length
Keep it under about 60 characters. Search engines cut longer titles by pixel width. Check yours with the search preview tool.
Order of words
Put the main topic first. Add your brand name at the end.
Weak: "Welcome | Rosa's Bakery | Home"
Better: "Sourdough bakery in Lisbon · Rosa's Bakery"
Rules to follow
- Give every page its own title.
- Use the words a customer would type.
- Describe what the page contains. Do not promise more.
- Leave out stuffed keyword lists.
Search engines may rewrite it
Google sometimes shows a different title. This often happens when the title does not match the page heading. Keep the title and the main heading close in meaning.
Write the tags
The meta tag generator writes the title, description and social tags together. For the description, read how to write a meta description.
