What is GEO, and how is it different from SEO?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It means writing and structuring your site so AI tools can read it, trust it and quote it in an answer.
SEO aims for a place in a list of links. GEO aims for a mention inside an answer. The two overlap a lot.
What stays the same
Both need pages that load fast, say clearly what they cover, and come from a source people trust. A page that ranks well in search is also easier for an AI tool to find.
What changes
An AI tool often gives one short answer, not ten links. So each page should hold facts that stand alone. Put the answer in the first sentence. Name your business, your service and your area in plain words.
Where to start
- Say what you do in the first paragraph of your home page.
- Add structured data for your business.
- Answer real customer questions on an FAQ page.
- Check that your robots.txt lets the crawlers you want read your site.
No one can promise a mention. These steps cost little and also help normal search.
