Last updated
Before you start
- Any plan. Connecting a domain you own is free on Free, Launch and Grow.
- A GoDaddy login and a published yaya site.
- The DNS steps from yaya. Open Website > Domain, type the name in Hostname and click Connect domain.
GoDaddy lets you edit records only when the domain uses GoDaddy nameservers. If it does not, edit the records at the company that runs the DNS.
Sign in and find the DNS page
- Sign in to your GoDaddy Domain Portfolio.
- Click the domain to open its Domain Settings page.
- Open the DNS section. It lists every record.
What the screen calls the fields
- Type: CNAME or TXT.
- Name: the prefix only, like
wwworshop. Do not type your domain name.@means the bare domain. - Value: where the record points. For a CNAME, paste the target from yaya.
- TTL: leave the value GoDaddy fills in.
Add the CNAME record for a subdomain or www
- Click Add New Record.
- Choose CNAME from the Type menu.
- Type
wwwin Name. - Paste the target from yaya in Value.
- Click Save.
If Domain Protection is on, GoDaddy asks you to verify your identity before it saves.
Connect the bare domain
GoDaddy documents no ALIAS option for this. Use www and forwarding instead. Forwarding sends visitors from the bare name to the www name.
- Connect
www.example.comin yaya and add its CNAME as above. - Open DNS in GoDaddy, then Forwarding.
- Click Add Forwarding and choose Domain.
- Enter
www.example.comas the destination. GoDaddy applies HTTPS to forwarding on its own. - Choose Permanent (301) and click Save.
Forwarding updates and locks the @ A record. To change it later, delete the forwarding first.
Add the TXT ownership record
yaya shows a name that starts with _cf-custom-hostname. Type only the part before your domain name.
- Click Add New Record and choose TXT.
- Type
_cf-custom-hostname.wwwin Name forwww.example.com. For the bare domain, type_cf-custom-hostname. - Paste the value from yaya in Value.
- Click Save.
Replace a conflicting record
A CNAME cannot share a name with another record. Delete the old record for the same host before you add the CNAME.
A new GoDaddy domain often has a parking record on @ and a www CNAME that points to @. Edit or delete the www record. Leave MX and mail TXT records as they are. See Keep your email working.
Check the result in yaya
- Open Website > Domain.
- Click Check again.
GoDaddy says most changes apply within an hour, and worldwide updates can take up to 48 hours. yaya sets up HTTPS on its own. There is no deploy step.
Fix common problems
GoDaddy rejects the Name. Type only the prefix, and read the message GoDaddy shows.
The card stays on "Waiting on DNS". See Fix a domain that won't verify.
I need the difference between the record types. See DNS records explained.
