Edit DNS records at Name.com

Where to find DNS records at Name.com, what the fields are called, and how to add the records yaya needs.

Last updated

Before you start

  • Any plan. Connecting a domain you own is free on Free, Launch and Grow.
  • A Name.com login and a published yaya site.
  • The DNS steps from Website > Domain in yaya. Keep that page open.

Name.com DNS only works when the domain uses Name.com's own name servers. Domains registered there use them by default. If you changed them, edit records at the company that runs your name servers.

Sign in and find the DNS page

  1. Sign in to Name.com.
  2. Open My Domains in the top menu.
  3. Select your domain.
  4. Open Manage DNS Records.

What the screen calls the fields

  • Type: the record type, such as CNAME, ANAME or TXT.
  • Host: the part before your domain, such as www.
  • Answer: where the record points. For TXT, it is the text value.

The TTL: how long other servers remember the record. Name.com's ANAME article shows a default of 300 seconds. Leave it on the default.

Add the CNAME record for a subdomain or www

  1. Copy the CNAME target from yaya.
  2. Open Manage DNS Records and choose CNAME as the Type.
  3. Type www (or your subdomain) in Host.
  4. Paste the target in Answer.
  5. Add the record.

The bare domain

For the bare domain, use an ANAME record. Name.com says an ANAME, unlike a CNAME, can sit next to other records on the same host.

  1. Choose ANAME as the Type.
  2. Enter the Host value that Name.com shows in its ANAME article. Name.com's CNAME article uses www as the usual example.
  3. Paste the target from yaya in Answer.
  4. Add the record.

If you prefer www, connect www.example.com and use Name.com's URL Forwarding to send the bare domain there. Name.com says forwarding does not work on .app, .dev or .page domains. It also says forwarding cannot force HTTPS.

Add the TXT ownership record

  1. Choose TXT as the Type.
  2. Type _cf-custom-hostname.www in Host. Use your own host after the dot. For the bare domain, type _cf-custom-hostname.
  3. Paste the value from yaya in Answer, then add the record.

Delete or replace a conflicting record

A CNAME cannot share a name with another record. A new domain can carry default records. Remove an old www record before you add the CNAME. URL Forwarding also creates A records, so delete a forward on the same host.

Leave MX and TXT mail records as they are. See Keep your email working.

Check the result in yaya

  1. Open Website > Domain.
  2. Click Check again.

DNS can take minutes to hours. yaya sets up HTTPS on its own. There is no deploy step.

Fix common problems

I cannot add records. The domain uses other name servers. Edit records at that company.

The card stays on "Waiting on DNS". See Fix a domain that won't verify.
