Move your site from Squarespace to yaya

Export your Squarespace content, rebuild the site in yaya from its address, and move your domain.

What moves and what does not

yaya reads the public text, headings and image references on your live Squarespace site and drafts a new site from them. Squarespace also offers a content export under its site settings, in a WordPress-format XML file. Use that file as a backup and to copy text from. Products, member areas and Squarespace email campaigns do not move.

Before you start

  • A Squarespace login and a yaya account.
  • Your domain login. If you bought the domain through Squarespace, you manage it in Squarespace domain settings.
  • About 45 minutes, plus DNS wait time.

Move your site

  1. Open your site's settings in Squarespace and look for the Import/Export option under the advanced settings.
  2. Choose export, download the XML file, and keep it as a backup.
  3. Save the images you want from your Squarespace pages.
  4. Open yaya and start onboarding. Paste your site address under Already have a website? (optional) and click Import from my site.
  5. Read the description under What does your business do? and add blog or product details that the page did not show.
  6. Pick your business type, location and language, then click Next.
  7. Review the draft, upload your images, and publish. See Publish your site.

Point your domain to yaya

Open the domain's DNS settings where it is registered, and follow Move a domain to yaya. Squarespace may need to release the domain from the old site first, so check its domain panel. If the domain is registered at Squarespace, it can stay there and only its DNS records change.

Add redirects for your old page addresses.

Fix common problems

Blog posts are missing. The import reads one page. Paste post text into the description, or write them in yaya.

The domain is locked. A new registration can have a transfer lock. Connect the domain and change DNS records, or remove the lock and see Transfer a domain in to yaya.
