Edit DNS records at Hover
Where to find DNS records at Hover, what the fields are called, and how to add the records yaya needs.
Last updated
Before you start
- Any plan. Connecting a domain you own is free on Free, Launch and Grow.
- A Hover login with your two-factor method, and a published yaya site.
- The DNS steps from Website > Domain in yaya. Keep that page open.
Hover DNS only works when the domain uses Hover's name servers: ns1.hover.com and ns2.hover.com. Otherwise, edit records at the company that runs your name servers.
Sign in and find the DNS page
- Sign in to the Hover control panel.
- Open your domain. The Overview page opens.
- Open the DNS section.
What the screen calls the fields
- Type: the record type.
- Hostname: a subdomain. Use
@for the bare domain. If the form asks for your full domain, type@. - Target Name: where a CNAME points.
- Content: the value of a TXT record.
Hover shows a TTL field only for MX records. Other records have no TTL field.
Add the CNAME record for a subdomain or www
- Copy the CNAME target from yaya.
- Click Add a record in the DNS section.
- Choose CNAME as the Type.
- Type
www(or your subdomain) in Hostname. - Paste the target in Target Name.
- Save the record.
The bare domain
Hover does not support a CNAME on the bare domain (@). Connect www.example.com instead.
Hover then suggests a forward from the bare domain to www:
- Open the Forwards tab and click Forward this domain.
- Choose Domain forward.
- Enter
https://www.example.comand click Save forward.
Hover forwarding needs two A records for @ and * that point to 216.40.34.41. Hover says it cannot forward the HTTPS version of your domain. Visitors who type https://example.com may not reach your site.
Add the TXT ownership record
- Choose TXT as the Type.
- Type
_cf-custom-hostname.wwwin Hostname. Use your own host after the dot. For the bare domain, type_cf-custom-hostname. - Paste the value from yaya in Content, then save.
Delete or replace a conflicting record
A CNAME cannot share a name with another record. Delete the old record for the same host first.
- Select the box next to the record in the DNS section.
- Open the Bulk edit menu and choose Delete.
- Click Delete again.
Hover warns that a deleted record can disconnect the service that uses it. Leave MX and TXT mail records as they are. See Keep your email working.
Check the result in yaya
- Open Website > Domain.
- Click Check again.
DNS can take minutes to hours. yaya sets up HTTPS on its own. There is no deploy step.
Fix common problems
The DNS section has no Add a record button. The domain uses other name servers. Edit records there.
The card stays on "Waiting on DNS". See Fix a domain that won't verify.
